My rekindled love for the King of Pop

Justin Timberlake

First of all, I would like to apologize for the slight unintended hiatus my blog has been on… The lure of my home, a comfortable bed, yummy food, and taped TV has done a great job of distracting me. But I am back! and I promise to be consistent this summer with my blog.

I recently caught Justin Timberlake on Oprah’s show Master Class, now don’t judge me. Oprah may sometimes be a little dramatic, but you can’t deny the woman really brings out the best in people. Justin Timberlake is a prime example of that.

This episode got me thinking. One thing that irks me about mainstream music is to me, Justin Timberlake’s music gets brushed under the rug, except for the singles. We all know the words to “Sexy Back”, “Mirrors”, “Cry Me A River” etc. But why don’t people know the words to “Blue Ocean Floor” one of Justin’s most beautifully composed songs off his first installment of The 20/20 Experience or “Amnesia” a gorgeous band heavy track from the second 20/20 Experience? I wish people would hear the single on the radio and say “Oh I love this song, maybe I should listen to the rest of the album and see if I like any other songs?” Yes I have to admit, I am one of those people who says “I knew that song before it was on the radio!!” But it’s true, people need to pay attention to the whole piece of art and not just the one painting hanging in the window.

This is a disease plaguing the music industry. In this day and age we are almost completely made up of one hit wonders and number one singles that fade out in about three months. People are more concerned with reaching number one and not the quality of their music. Justin Timberlake is the complete opposite; a true master at the music business.

Listen to what he says about hard work:

Throughout his whole interview you get the pure feeling that Timberlake understands the true sense of being a musician. His hard work writing songs, learning instruments, performing for his fans has all paid off now that his career has launched into full gear.

We all know Timberlake as the wisecracking funnyman that seems to shut down the SNL set every time he appears but during this episode of Master Class, we see a more refined and philosophical Justin as he explains how much he likes being a beginner; “I can look at everyone and say ‘I have no idea how to do this, lets figure it out.'” Words to live by? I think so!

My point is Justin Timberlake is extremely talented, his entire concept for The 20/20 Experience was absolutely genius and shattered what we knew as the standard idea of pop music. Timberlake has the perfect combination of real band heavy music, catchy choruses and stunning musical composition.

Give EVERY song a listen, not just the one you hear when you get in the car on the way to work. You won’t regret it.
