WHO: Tory Lanez

WHERE: Toronto, Ontario

GENRE: Hip-Hop/Rap

TOP SONG: “Say It”

Newcomer Tory Lanez has been picking up speed in the music scene. While his hit single, “Say It”, released last year, proved his R&B specialty, his latest song, “L.A. Confidential” shows a very different side of the singer.

His voice sounds more soothing and alternative, but the lyrics still prove to be the hip-hop side of Lanez, “And I hope you don’t expect to be my girlfriend/ LA confidential/ LA confidential/ Cause I think you know I’d never leave my girlfriend.” He weaves in and out of soft notes and rap explicits. Something not many artists can successfully do.

With an impressive amount of singles under his belt (10 in January alone), there’s no doubt his debut album will seriously deliver. Lanez recently told The Cruz Show on L.A.’s Power 106 about the sound he’s trying to create called “swavey”. “The genre of putting more than one genre together…All these artists right now that are singing and rapping, like Bryson Tiller and Drake, those people are all swavey artists,” he said.

Lanez single, “Say It” is the perfect example of the swavey sound he’s trying to emulate. Hip-hop beats echo throughout the song as he croons on the border of rap-singing (much like other newcomer Bryson Tiller). “Say It” proves Lanez worth in the new age hip-hop/rap genre.

Listen to THIS this Weeknd

The Weeknd decided to give his fans a realllllllllllll nice Christmas present. Two new songs? You got it!

As if his flawless Beauty Behind the Madness album wasn’t enough, he released “Low Life” featuring Future and “Pass Dat (The Weeknd Remix)” featuring Jeremih. Both were uploaded to his SoundCloud (https://m.soundcloud.com/theweeknd) on Christmas Eve. AKA – add these to your pregame playlist folks.

“Low Life” has a deep backbeat as Future’s classic tweaked vocals spit some raps. Then The Weeknd nonchalantly croons, “I’m reppin for the low life”. The song, spanning past five minutes keeps you intoxicated from start to finish. This is past the R&B stage, and more on the hip-hop side; something The Weeknd proves he can also master.

“Pass Dat” is straight fire. The bass is unreal and The Weeknd absolute slays his verse in the sexiest way. His vocals are so unique you can’t help but want to learn every word. He truly puts Jeremih to shame with this one. This song was a banger before, but this remix takes it to another level.

Touché to The Weeknd, for keeping the good vibes alive.

Bryson-Tiller-Exchange

If you’ve seen Kylie Jenner’s quick Snapchat vids of her lip-syncing lately, it’s probably to a Bryson Tiller song. I looked him up and fell in love. Hot damn, Tiller can SING.

He has perfected R&B with subtle rap and hip-hop elements making Trapsoul the perfect soundtrack to your love life. Each song is just as sultry as the next; keeping a mellow vibe. “So gimme all of you in exchange for me, just give me all of you in exchange for me, for me,” Tiller croons on “Exchange.” He blends poetic melodies with explicit rap content in a way that makes you appreciate rap as musical art. The swearing is subtle and adds a slight edge to his music.

Standout track, “Don’t” starts out with a spooky intro, then the bass kicks in as Tiller sweetly sings, “Don’t, don’t play with her don’t be dishonest.” The song talks about sweeping a girl off her feet and taking her away from the man who doesn’t treat her right. Ummmmm… yes please? Whether you’re enjoying a chill wine night at home or out on a fun date night, Bryson Tiller is the perfect sound.

Chris Brown’s album, X was released last year and further showed off his musical skill into the dance world, starting with the heavy track “X”. This song builds into something crazyyyyyy good. Brown sings low, “If you’re only as good as the company you keep, then imma blame you for what they say about me.” Quiet and calm verses tell a story of a broken relationship and the release comes during the chorus as Brown yells, “I swear to God I’m moving on, I ain’t go back no more.” With a hard hip-hop beat underlined with some dance/electro sounds-Brown has himself another banger. The beauty of the verses serve as the perfect contrast to the emotional and angry chorus. “X” is what music with meaning sounds like.
