“In a way, I’m a thief…”

Are the first words out of Marcus Haney’s mouth in the documentary “No Cameras Allowed,” where viewers get a glimpse into a college guy’s dream of becoming a filmmaker/photographer all with the help of lies, fake wristbands, cameras, and lots of ambition.

Rewind to Coachella Music Festival in 2010, where it all began. Haney (and one of his good friends) being the poor college students they are and not having hundreds of dollars to spend on a ticket, dressed in all black, jumped the fence, slept under a bus, and walked through to the general admission section the next morning with a surprising “Good morning!” from security as they walked through the gates. They did it, they were finally at Coachella.

Haney began sneaking into the photo pit for certain performances, carrying several cameras and recording devices. He even made it to the side stage of Muse’s performance. Haney realized he could compile all of these crazy pictures and videos and show his friends what Coachella is really like.

A passion quickly grew in Haney, he realized how much he loved doing this; travelling, meeting musicians and capturing the rare moments that make them normal humans just like the rest of us.

Add a couple crazy car rides, an invitation to tour with Mumford and Sons, music festivals like: Ultra, Bonnaroo, Coachella, Glastonbury, and Austin City Limits, taking pictures at the running of the bulls, an RV road trip with friends, and no college degree, and you have a compelling documentary start to finish.

I don’t want to give away Marcus’ full story, because honestly he tells it better himself. His journey to follow his dreams is so heartwarming and uplifting, that it makes you want to quit everything and become a musical vagabond yourself.

Haney truly understood how lucky he was to capture the moments he did as he mentions when touring with Mumford and Sons, saying “I got to see them as real human beings.” Not only do you get fantastic live videos of the band, but some drunken nights that you can’t help but laugh at.

Through the haze of all the insane and brilliant things Marcus was doing, he alienated his friends, family, and his love interest, which all come crashing down in one moment when he says ” For me there are two things that are massively important, the people that I love and the conquest of the unknown.”

“No Cameras Allowed” lets you peak through Marcus’ struggle between his dreams and his reality and how he made the two become one. Marcus is an artist, and being an artist leaves him with no choice but thinking and being creative constantly. That’s his life; creating art. He appreciates the little things people do and blows them up to make you think, admire, and inspire.

The thing I loved most about this documentary was the fact that Marcus knew what to capture, he knew what fans were itching to see, he understood that musicians are so insanely beautiful to watch, that he filmed all of it. He didn’t just focus on the crop tops, alcohol, and stupid dancing at music festivals, he caught the musicians in their element and how music can truly move massive amounts of people in the most beautiful way. And I admire him for that.

The entire documentary is available to watch on MTV.com: http://www.mtv.com/shows/no_cameras_allowed/

His website is: http://www.jamesmarcushaney.com/

I’ll leave you with a quote from a character that you will meet when you watch the documentary: “Life is what you make it, we only get one go, don’t waste it working, don’t get a mortgage, get an RV, get a life, get on the road.”

Favorite live Paramore vids!

Over the years of my severe obsession with Paramore, late night YouTube-ing has benefited me. I have accumulated some favorite live videos of Paramore performances that you may have never seen. I’ve always wanted to make a post about these, because they deserve to be seen.

1.) You may know the song “Miracle” from the album “Riot!” but I guarantee you have never heard the outro for it. It is one of the most powerful outro’s I’ve ever heard and I have accepted the fact that I will never hear it live…ever. They will probably never play it ever again, so thank god for YouTube. Hayley literally puts her entire soul into every note and the band ( a 5 piece back then) all sound like a true rock band.

2.) This is another intro, but it was used for one of their spring tour’s back in the day! The only words Hayley says are near the end; “We’re starting over!” which is kind of bittersweet considering Zac and Josh left the group later on. But the guitar part is so so pretty.

3.) “Turn It Off” from the album “Brand New Eyes” is a vocally challenging song which is why they do not play it often. I have watched this video a million times because of the one note she hits at 2:34 which is the “again” part. She goes up an octave and it is so so dope it gives me cold chills. See for yourself!

4.) This is another intro that was used for the Brand New Eyes tour back in 2009. It seems to be a parallel to the song “Brick By Boring Brick” Some of the lyrics are “So your father told you once that you were his princess….So here you are in pieces trying to prove to us its real…I have made a home here for me, don’t burn it down with your fantasy.” I found this video a long time ago and I still desperately wished they would’ve released it on iTunes. I know many fans would gravitate towards it.

5.) Last but absolutely NOT least the famous “Let the Flames Begin” and “Part ||” all in one video. I saw this live this summer when I went to Monumentour and it is freaking phenomenal. Hayley’s vocals really do let the flames begin. I also have to say Part || is one of the best ideas Paramore has ever had. A sequel to “Let the Flames Begin” is absolutely what every Paramore fan has ever wanted.

One Republic lights it up!

First of all let me apologize for my absence in the blog world… I have been busy working two jobs and trying to get myself prepared to head back to college. Who knew summer would be so busy??

Despite my packed summer, this past weekend I had the wonderful opportunity to finally see One Republic live in concert! Last year around the same time my family and I had tickets to see them and the show got cancelled. We saw the opening band and everything, then One Republic came on stage (minus Ryan Tedder) and apologized for their cancellation. It was my birthday present…I was crushed.

So this year, we made it happen! My dreams came true and I could not have been happier. The Native Summer Tour is NOT one to miss. With two noteworthy opening bands (The Script and American Authors) this was a fantastic night.

Although “Best Day of My Life” is probably the most annoying song on the planet, I did enjoy American Authors’ performance. They had a lot of energy and managed to hype everyone up for The Script and most of all, One Republic.

Then came The Script. They completely warmed my heart. I have loved this band for a long time and have always wanted to see them live. So opening for One Republic was the whipped cream on top of a beautiful birthday celebration. The lead singer, Danny, made every fan feel special.

After singing their first hit “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved” the crowd went wild. We all were cheering and screaming for them. You could see the pure gratification on Danny’s face as he realized, they’ve made it. After a long emotional pause he said something along the lines of “We have the best f****** fans in the world, we love you guys!”

Near the end of their set, Danny made a sprint for the audience running right behind my cousins and I as we squealed in shock that he was right next to us. He went to go sing in front of the lawn folk and continued running back to the stage (bodyguards in tow on both sides.)

My favorite song they performed would have to be “For the First Time” there is something purely beautiful about it. The piano and the lyrics really make it a true anthem. Another fun moment was when Danny told the crowd to call an ex boyfriend/girlfriend so they could sing “Nothing” to them. One woman in the front called her ex-boyfriend and handed Danny her phone. He stayed on the line the entire time as Danny sang “Nothing” into the phone, it was actually hilarious!! After the song he had the entire crowd yell “Goodbye A**h***!” as he hung up the phone. It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen.

Overall, I was ecstatic at The Script’s performance. They really blew me away. I would absolutely see them again, probably as a headliner.

After a long extraneous wait for One Republic, they finally began the show! The stage had a curtain blocking the band as they started to play “Don’t Look Down” and then directly into “Light It Up” both from their newest album “Native”. The tan-ish curtain showed the crowd the trippy moving shadows of each band member as they continued playing “Light It Up”. Near the end of the song the curtain finally dropped, displaying gorgeous lights, an eclectic backdrop and none other than a dancing Ryan Tedder swirling around the stage to his own voice.

curtain

I was in heaven.

Every song was even better then what you would hear in your car on a late night emotional drive.

Favorite songs live:

“Can’t Stop” – The bass makes your heart beat out of your chest and Ryan’s falsetto is to die for.

“Come Home” –  One of my favorite songs of all time, I have been waiting my whole life to hear it live.

“Apologize” – The slowed down piano version Ryan sang with strings in the back served a serious amount of emotion, not to mention he tacked on Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” flawlessly at the end of the song making it seem like the two were meant to be sung together.

“If I Lose Myself” – In my mind this was One Republic’s ‘comeback song’ and is spectacular live. The band decided to perform the Alesso remix which got the crowd up and dancing on their feet. This was the perfect encore.

The entire band looked like they were having a blast together, each member putting their heart and soul into every song. There’s no denying that Ryan steals the spotlight considering he can play piano, guitar, tambourine, and probably every other instrument on the planet, but each member is just as talented and deserves to shine on that stage.

Overall this band lives for music and it is clearly evident in the shows they give. Ryan Tedder made a promise that the next time they see us they will have new music, new clothes, and will hopefully be better looking… no worries, they look just as good right now!

My favorite part of the night was when Ryan said “Lyrics for me make the world go round.”

Amen to that, Amen.

MONUMENTOUR!

It feels like this should’ve happened a long time ago. One band got me through
some awkward middle school dances, the other band has helped me enter adulthood.

Their fans could be a 12 year old girl or a 50 year old man. It feels as though
this tour was meant to be. True musicians on one stage sharing a glorious
spotlight is musical heaven.

Of course, I’m talking about Monumentour a co-headlining tour with Fall Out Boy
& Paramore for the summer. Everything about this show was pure rock. From the 3
confetti cannons during Paramore’s performance to the shooting flames in Fall
Out Boy’s set.

One thing is for sure, Paramore is a ROCK band and Fall Out Boy are not  boys
anymore (Pete Wentz is a total babe, seriously… Wow)

I’ll try to relax and start from the beginning and try not to ramble like I did
when I was telling my mother about it.

The opening band was New Politics which I had only heard a little bit about
prior to the show. I must say, they really killed it. They were the perfect band
to open. With a surprising mix of pop, rock, and alternative, the crowd was
singing along to familiar songs and loving the high energy all three band
members emitted into the anxious crowd. Lead singer, David Boyd has an insane
talent for dancing and seriously breaks it down to a kick ass drum breat.
Congrats New Politics, you gained a new fan.

Paramore hit the stage next with not too long of a wait, I was surprised. This was my 5th time seeing them and I can’t help but get extremely anxious and excited while awaiting their arrival.

Complete with what looked like a short light bar behind the three superstars
(Hayley, Jeremy, and Taylor) and of course their three bars made out of light
bulbs proudly hanging behind the entire band.

With a total of two or three explosions of confetti and a launch of some
Paramore beach balls, this concert turned into a party. People of all ages
singing along to every song. The show stopper was of course “Let the Flames
Begin” and then the more recent sequel to it titled “Part ||” this high energy
powerful performance has and will be forever etched into my mind as the best
song I have ever seen performed live, by anyone. The whaling guitars and
unbelievable vocals by Williams literally leave the crowd breathless until they
regain momentum and cheer the band on as they seamlessly start “Part ||”.

Hayley always acknowledges the crowd, after almost every song, which is
something I really admire, because you want to feel connected to the band you’re
seeing. You want to feel like for that night, you guys are friends, enjoying
some music and loving life together. That’s how Paramore makes you feel. Every
single time. Hayley also acknowledges all the band members on stage and let’s
the crowd cheer them on. Not a lot of bands do this and it’s really important
that they do. These band members put in just as much work as everyone else and
deserve every ounce of stardom the other band members receive.

“Ain’t It Fun” proved to be the new flawless closer and got the crowd riled up
and ready for more rock & roll. Jeremy’s bass playing was spot on, that man can
slay. I couldn’t have been happier with their performance, it was everything I
thought it would be and more.

Playing songs like “Born For This” from their Riot days and the heart wrenching
“Last Hope” from their most recent album (I cry during it, every time). They
gave the crowd everything they wanted. Hayley gave a short speech before
performing “Last Hope” where she tells fans that if there’s one song she would
want any new or old fan of Paramore to listen to, it would be this song.

I can’t say one bad thing about Paramore, never have, never will. They are the reason I am the person I am today. Their on stage presence is a serious skill which not even the hardest rockers can achieve. I will continue seeing them live anytime I can until I am crumpled up in a wheelchair in the handicapped section. Someday I will get to meet them (hopefully) and tell them in person how much they mean to me.

After another slightly short wait Fall Out Boy’s curtain was set up equipped
with several televisions showing an intricate video of life along with some
positive advice. A couple gunshots (which were basically like fireworks and
scared the #%€< out of everyone) went off and the smoke cleared: Fall Out Boy
has arrived and immediately played “The Phoenix” from their newest album “Save
Rock & Roll”

Lead singer, Patrick Stump has proved his voice is meant to be sung to crowds
and crowds of people. He makes it look as effortless as tying your shoes. Every
song was high energy and fantastic to watch. The stage had three levels, massive
televisions, smoke, fire (which I could feel the heat from in my seat). One of
the best moments of the set was when drummer, Andrew Hurley and Patrick Stump
went head to head at a drum off to a mash up of a couple Jay-Z hits. It was
absolutely incredible and went on for what felt like the best 2 minutes of my
life. The crowd went absolutely insane.

Everyone sang out to old hits like “Dance, Dance” and “A Little Less Sixteen
Candles, A Little More ‘Touch Me'” New songs like “Miss Missing You” and “Save
Rock & Roll” showed the crowd this band is back and better than ever with
crossover hits and grown up lyrics.

Pete Wentz seemed to be the narrator throughout the show, saying little cliche
snippets before every song…”follow your dreams…”, “You guys f****** rock!”
Yadda yadda.

Overall, it was an incredible show. A legendary tour indeed. I highly suggest you see these bands. If you can catch them on this tour do it- you will NOT regret it.

Here are a couple pictures from the show!

God bless the bassists

In case you are blind or you don’t care what bands look like, let me paint you a picture.

Bassists are HOT.

That is all.

I don’t know what it is, I don’t know if there is some sort of contract that has to be signed or what. Can anyone fill me in? Or is it just a wonderful coincidence?

Here are some bassists you may not have known were hot, and if you do know them then enjoy! 🙂

Jeremy Davis – Paramore

Image

This guy has been stealing my heart since day one. Did I mention he married a beautiful English woman and now has an adorable little baby girl?

Funny story: When I saw Paramore in New York City a year ago I was on this guys shoulders yelling Hayley’s name as it was dead quiet. Hayley never heard me but Jeremy was just looking at me and laughing. It was a pretty big “LOL” moment and one I will never forget.

Image

Of course I’m talking about the Pete Wentz minus the guy liner and scary Goth man bangs… that was a weird time. I am very excited to see him for the first time performing with Fall Out Boy in July for Monumentour!!!

Jared Followill – Kings of Leon

Image

I have to say, these brothers (and one cousin) are all good looking. The bad boy image seems to be working in their favor.

Fun fact: I watched “Talihina Sky” the Kings of Leon documentary and it truly made me fall absolutely in love with this band, more than I was before. They really do have an incredible ‘rags to riches’ story that is extremely compelling. Check it out—–> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEcxxQdeJfM

He also has the best Twitter bio ever. It simply says “I make your seats vibrate.”

Guy Berryman – Coldplay

Image

I mean…… He’s incredibly shy but when you catch a smile from him, it lights up the room.

Kevin Ray – Walk the Moon

Image

This picture…just too much.

If you’ve never heard of Walk the Moon get on it!! They are the perfect summer band to listen to. Its a pretty blend of pop/alt-rock and they always have high energy. Every song has a catchy chorus, quirky sounds, and simple lyrics. Check out: “Lisa Baby”, “Iscariot”, and “Fixin'”

Jacob Fink – Foster the People

Image

I know… he looks like a Hollister ad.

Who knew this beautiful person existed in Foster the People. This band was formed in California, so maybe all that time in the sun is what created the flawless tan…

Well I hope I proved my point: Bassists are hot.
