Flume seems to be on a role lately. Not only does he remix some of the coolest songs and make them even cooler (Listen to his rendition of “Tennis Courts” and “You & Me”) but he’s been collaborating with some of the best pop vocalists out right now. His last single “Never Be Like You” featuring Kai, is now everywhere. His latest, “Say It” features the sweet vocals of hippie-pop sensation Tove Lo. As usual, the song builds to a beautiful electronic blow-up that is as mesmerizing as the cover art that goes with it. Lo sings with a punchy whiny-ness that you can’t help but love. “Bite me babe, you make me love the pain, break my bed to make me wanna stay.” The song deals with the unexplainable pull of two people to be together but simply can’t. The lyrics remain passionately beautiful as Flume usually does. There’s a certain magic Flume has that other DJ’s cannot master.

Think about Ellie Goulding having a baby with Tinashe, that’s what Terror Jr. could be compared to. High pitched vocals, with saucy lyrics. A steady beat keeps the song on a slick train into pop land. “Down for one night, like I got three strikes,” sings Jr. as the inaudible backup vocals and thudding beat pop back in making you tap your feet along. The song appears in Kylie Jenner’s “Gloss” video where her girlfriends are seen getting into some money troubles at a beat up motel in the desert (totally badass.) Jenner nonchalantly waits in the car, applying her lip gloss as “3 Strikes” echoes in the background. Putting the perfect sexy pop punch in the video. But, who is Terror Jr.? People are suspecting it’s Jenner under this alias, considering no social media accounts existed until after the video. Hmm…..

Mr. and Mrs. Twenty88

Friday was not only April Fools Day. It was the day we got introduced to Mr. and Mrs. Twenty88 -AKA- Rapper Big Sean and flowerchild R&B princess Jhene Aiko. After listening to this album, you’ll WISH and PRAY that they someday get together. The two have collabed in the past with “Beware” off Sean’s 2013’s Hall of Fame and “I Know” off of his 2015 album Dark Sky Paradise. But Twenty88 is different. Both Aiko and Sean turned 28 in March of this year and both were born in 1988, which is why 88 makes so much sense.

Each song is smooth, clear, addicting, and just plain beautiful. Even a song with such a harsh title; “Selfish” keeps a dance-y tropical vibe that leaves romantic notions in your head. Aiko’s vocals remain as pure as ever, convincing you that she’s an angel on Earth. “Late night, texting, phone off, no stressing, how could you be so selfish?” the two harmonize as they deal with real-life 2016 problems.

I didn’t know how much I needed this duo until I heard this album. Aiko can rap and curse just like the best of them, she’s just prettier at it. Sean keeps his rhythmic flow and respects the chill element Aiko needs in her music. Both have a sultry musical quality that brings hip-hop and R&B together in a cohesive way. Think about drinking hard liquor in a floral dress, that’s Twenty88. Heavy bass on “Push It” brings sexy to the forefront. Elements of a classic R&B song is heard in Aiko’s subtle backup vocals, while Sean raps about his plans with his lady later…

Aiko recently told Flaunt magazine, “Music now doesn’t really cater to the feelings of a real relationship, It’s all about trapping and bragging. I feel like this project is something that’s needed right now. The whole idea of the man and woman duet, especially a whole project, is just good for people to see. That duality is a perfect combination.”

Now let me go grab some wine and take a bubble bath while I listen to this on repeat.

Zayn proves once again that he’s pulling a classic Justin Timberlake and finding his true success out of his solo career versus the boy band that brought him into the spotlight. My prediction? Zayn’s debut album Mind of Mine will solidify his place into the pop/R&B sensation that’s taking over radio waves. His latest single, “BeFoUr” takes on a darker vibe as Malik hazily sings, “So say what you wanna say, what you want, shame is you won’t say that to my face.” Poetic lyrics flow effortlessly out of Zayn’s mouth as a striking beat pulls you in with every verse. Layered pretty harmonies (reminiscent of a young Justin Timberlake) plague the chorus in the sexiest way. Don’t even get me started on that falsetto. I will now refer to Zayn as the reincarnated Justin Timberlake. This is just the beginning for Zayn and he knows it…

Who You Need: Tory Lanez

WHO: Tory Lanez

WHERE: Toronto, Ontario

GENRE: Hip-Hop/Rap

TOP SONG: “Say It”

Newcomer Tory Lanez has been picking up speed in the music scene. While his hit single, “Say It”, released last year, proved his R&B specialty, his latest song, “L.A. Confidential” shows a very different side of the singer.

His voice sounds more soothing and alternative, but the lyrics still prove to be the hip-hop side of Lanez, “And I hope you don’t expect to be my girlfriend/ LA confidential/ LA confidential/ Cause I think you know I’d never leave my girlfriend.” He weaves in and out of soft notes and rap explicits. Something not many artists can successfully do.

With an impressive amount of singles under his belt (10 in January alone), there’s no doubt his debut album will seriously deliver. Lanez recently told The Cruz Show on L.A.’s Power 106 about the sound he’s trying to create called “swavey”. “The genre of putting more than one genre together…All these artists right now that are singing and rapping, like Bryson Tiller and Drake, those people are all swavey artists,” he said.

Lanez single, “Say It” is the perfect example of the swavey sound he’s trying to emulate. Hip-hop beats echo throughout the song as he croons on the border of rap-singing (much like other newcomer Bryson Tiller). “Say It” proves Lanez worth in the new age hip-hop/rap genre.
