“IV. Sweatpants” comes off Gambino’s album titled, Because the Internet (2013). Clever jabs, arrogance, and swag are the main themes of this song. “I’m winnin’, yeah, yeah, I’m winnin’, rich kid, a**hole, paint me as a villain.” Gambino doesn’t care what you think about him, his upbringing, or anything he does for that matter. “Sweatpants” is the classic hip-hop song too thick and gnarly to not get addicted to. The music video features Gambino looking somewhat fed up with today’s society-stuck in the same routine everyday, walking into the same diner filled with the same people that were there before; “I got more tail than that PetCo, you faker than some Sweet’N Low, Yeah, you got some silverware, but really are you eating though?” This is Gambino’s attempt to break the mold and “do you”.

Miguel’s new album Wildheart is nothing short of wild sexual references and catchy 70’s esque vibes. “Waves” is no different. “Don’t stop, I wanna ride that wave, all night…” Miguel croons through sultry muffled vocals. A clap happy drum beat makes you wanna two step and throw on some bell bottoms or skate with your boo at a roller rink. Miguel’s layered vocals add a psychedelic element that go hand in hand with the explicit lyrics. Subtlety has never been Miguel’s strong suit, he makes it very clear what he wants; “Yeah, get wild baby, so hot, God damn, I need a towel baby, I could wipe you down right now baby, I could ride that wave right now baby.” AKA – not the song you want to play in the car with your mom on your way to go grocery shopping…

“I got a life out there somewhere its waiting, lined with palm trees and only new faces,” sound straight out of lead singer Hayley Williams’ dream diary. Paramore added this adventurous heavy track to the deluxe version of their self titled album, Paramore. “Escape Route” follows someone as they start on a new adventure; something most people can easily relate to. “I’m moving on, cause I just want to feel for once that I belong,” are the lyrics blurted out of Williams’ mouth as she effortlessly creates her new life plan. “Route” is reminiscient of Paramore’s earlier songs (especially All We Know Is Falling), because of its emphasis on heavy guitar and drums and a fast paced/repetitive chorus. Nothing like a straight up Paramore rock jam to motivate some positive life changes, right?!

No One's Gonna Love You

Lead singer Ben Bridwell’s vocals glisten alongside a steady guitar as “No One’s Gonna Love You” begins. A romantic song, that could sing you to sleep (and maybe shed a couple tears?) This is the song you want to hear at your wedding. It stands as a promise of love; “But no one is ever gonna love you more than I do, no one’s gonna love you more than I do.” The most beautiful aspect of this song is the layering effects that are heard throughout it. Guitars have never sounded as magical as they do in this song, almost melancholy. Drums keep a steady backbeat as alt-synths plague the background. Bridwell gracefully leads the listener through a love story. Band of Horses have a way of making songs feel endless, there’s not much to them, but they all hold their own weight and remain relevant in music for years to come. “No One’s Gonna Love You” is one of those songs.

“I Know Places” – Vance Joy cover

Recently, Taylor Swift tweeted about a cover of one of her 1989 songs, “I Know Places”. A story of a secret relationship, hidden from the public and the unity found within it. Ms. Swift thinks it might be her favorite cover she’s ever seen…and I HAVE to agree. The second I plugged my headphones in and watched the full video, I was obsessed. Vance Joy does a phenomenal job at giving emotion to every single word in the song. Almost as if, “I Know Places” became re-born again through the mouth of Joy himself.

Joy takes a romantic twist on the song, making it all acoustic, using his voice and string plucking fingers to create a gorgeous new song that Ms. Swift is certainly proud of. The chorus is gentler, filling every gap of the guitar chords. Joy’s voice wavers in the most beautiful way as he makes his way to “I know places we can hide.” Near the end, he sings “Just grab my hand and don’t ever drop it, my love,” and it is breathtakingly soft and perfect. The song almost takes on a whole new meaning than the one Swift gave it. Hers is powerful, slightly dark, and loud. While Joy’s could count as a love ballad, something you could hear at a wedding, the elements of love are more prominent with the easygoing pluck of every guitar string. I actually prefer Vance Joy’s cover to the original. I think you will too…
