“You know when you have a friend, and you know they’d be super into this other friend you have but they don’t know each other so you make the connection? It was like that,” is how Charli XCX describes the formation of Nasty Cherry. Yes, you heard that correct, pop superstar Charli XCX is the mastermind behind your new favorite pop/punk girl group, Nasty Cherry.

Nasty Cherry is Chloe Chaidez (guitar), Debbie Knox-Hewsom (drums), Gabbriette Bechtel (vocals), and Georgia Somary (bass). All of the girls know Charli but not eachother. If you haven’t checked out their Netflix show yet, I highly recommend it. If you love rise to fame stories that are fun and female-empowering, go watch! Fans get a heavy glimpse into what it’s like to create and curate a band (and brand) that is successful and honest. Through a haze of vape pens and smeared eyeliner, the four women start living and creating music together, personalities come out and tensions start to rise.

Through the ups and downs, Nasty Cherry is finally formed and are already hitting their stride. Hit single, “Win” is Nasty Cherry to its core. A spunky pop-punk anthem declaring ones desire to always be on top. Gabbi’s stellar alto vocals are deep and desirable as ever as they glide over an alluring bass line. The lyrics are retro and as rebellious as possible; “I’m such a psycho, got violent eyes, I’ll make it rain down, electric skies, I tell you secrets, I tell you lies.”

Watch the spunky video:

The band recently released their first EP titled, Season 1 featuring the edgy, “Music With Your Dad”, the euphoric “Live Forever” and of course, my favorite, “Win”. I can’t wait to hear more from these girls in the future.

Charli XCX Returns with “Boys”

A couple months ago Charli XCX shared a photo on Instagram with a caption that sent fans for a bit of a loop. “I spoke about my album and how it was done and coming out in May. I know it’s May now and there still isn’t an album but I just wanted you guys to know it’s not because anything’s wrong or I don’t wanna put it out or anything,” the singer continued, “I just want to make as much music as possible. So that’s what’s happening. I’m in the studio a lot and feeling more creative than ever…”

From then on, Charli lent her voice to other hit makers in the fresh/futuristic genre of music. Artists like Whethan (“Love Gang”) and Mura Musa (“1 Night”) borrowed Charli for some sassy hooks bound to be perfect. But, she didn’t stop there. The pop star released a mixtape titled Number 1 Angel back in March of this year. Charli has made it crystal clear that her album will be flawless, which is why she might not let go of it until 2018. “Boys” is her latest single. Will it be tied to the new album? Does this mean the album release date could be this year? Or is “Boys” just a taste of what we can expect for future tunes?

Charli explains the male-heavy music video to radio host Annie Mac saying, “They’re doing all the sexy things that girls usually do in music videos.” No hot girls bouncing in bikini’s or dancing on guys in the club. Joe Jonas eating pancakes, Diplo playing with puppies, Cameron Dallas modeling with a chainsaw, Charlie Puth washing a car, Flume reading a book; those are just some of the stars in this homage to sexy men. As usual, the pop tune is glowing with futuristic sounds and a bouncy chorus, “I was busy think bout boys, head is spinnin, thinkin bout boys.”

NMF Picks!

“Love Galore” – SZA feat. Travis Scott

Pairing up with hip-hop vets is in SZA’s musical nature; “Galore” is no different. She’s worked with Rihanna, Chance the Rapper, Drake… this time, Travis Scott. A repetitive song about the everlasting need for love. SZA proves her R&B chops one note at a time.

“Quit” – Cashmere Cat feat. Ariana Grande

This track marks the third collab between the DJ and pop songstress. As usual, Grande’s vocals steal the show as she sings about a love that’s taken over her; “I can’t quit you” she wails beautifully. Cat merges pop vocals with inventive electro sounds that make him stand out among the rest.

“Cherry Hill” – Russ

Low-key hit maker, Russ, is back with the hauntingly beautiful “Cherry Hill”. Wavering between rap, hip-hop, and R&B, he can do no wrong. “Maybe I’m a food, maybe I’m a fool for you…” he sings repeatedly. A brief electric guitar riff adds to the sultry element felt throughout this song.

“Love Gang” – Whethan feat. Charli XCX

Charli XCX brings attitude to Whethan’s gritty dance beat on “Love Gang.” Her punky vocals make this track radio ready any minute. There’s no doubt, we’ve missed Charli; “Gang” reminds us of just how cool she is.

“I’m the One” – DJ Khaled, Quavo, Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper, Lil Wayne

As usual, what makes for a good rap song? Throw on about 4 people and something’s gotta sound dope, right? “I’m the One” is your summer car jam; cruising down city streets with your friends. Bieber carries the chorus while Chance and Lil Wayne shut it down with some hot verses. I’m patiently waiting for this to take over radios everywhere.
