Sure Sure’s self-titled album is nothing short of cool. Each song somehow makes you feel content and inspired. Taking vintage sounds and making them modern suit these California natives quite well. Start to finish, an album that will surely be on repeat in my house for quite a while. Here’s what the band had to say about the album, inspiration, and future plans!

1.) Opening song, “Giants” is such a fun and relatable tune. What inspired the lyrics?

“This song burst into existence during a Dungeons and Dragons session in which we were fighting a lot of giants (we are still on the same quest actually…). Mike started playing these really basic chords on a children’s acoustic guitar, and Chris started singing an off-the-cuff melody, and suddenly we were singing ‘Don’t let the water burn you baby…‘ together with our friends Scott and Chase and Hank. The lyrics sort of fell into place after that, taking the form of tongue-in-cheek yet sincere life advice. But the lyrics were also inspired by the feeling of being overwhelmed by the insanity of the world, and the reciprocal feeling of wanting to experience something simple and warm, like the sunlight on your skin or the touch of another human being.

2.) How would you describe your sound on this album?

“Warm and crackling and a bit breezy. End of summer/early fall. Sunny Radiohead”

3.) The vocal unity throughout the album reminds me of the band Chicago. What other artists/bands do you look up to for inspiration?

“Nick Drake is a huge inspiration… Tame Impala, Radiohead, Feist, Steely Dan, Anderson .Paak, Talk Talk, Big Thief, George Harrison (and the Beatles of course), Andy Shauf.”

4.) Piano seems to be coming back in pop, alternative, and even rock music. What’s your opinion on keeping that “band” sound in music?

“We just got really into capturing organic, acoustic sounds on this record.  This also probably had to do with the fact that we were listening to a lot of folk (Andy Shauf) and old Beatles (Help! / Hard Day’s Night) at the time. We still love synthesizers and modern crisp production, and you can actually hear a somewhat different production style on some of the older tunes on the album like ‘New Biome’ and ‘This Must Be The Place.’  But the bulk of the songs (‘Info Machine’, ‘Foreign Room’, ‘lowlife’, ‘K-Town’, ‘Friends’, ‘Giants’) were written and recorded quickly – each song took about two days – and we captured them in more of that traditional band style with layered acoustic guitars, upright piano, organ, and ukelele.”

5.) What song are you most excited to perform live and why?

“Oh boy… ‘Hands Up Head Down’ has quickly become our favorite on tour with Hippo Campus because we teach everyone the dance move and suddenly a thousand people are dancing like zombies while we play. It positively pops off.

6.) What does 2018 look like?

“Tour! On tour now until end of Feb with Hippo Campus, and then we have our own national headline tour in April/May. Meanwhile we will be recording new material whenever we are home in LA, as well as making live videos in our house. Gonna be a wild year.”

Single Review: “The Middle”

Zedd’s latest single, “The Middle” features country newcomer Maren Morris, who proves to have the perfect voice for an EDM hook. She whines on the chorus “Why don’t you just meet me in the middle, I’m losing my mind just a little” in true Zedd pop/flirty fashion.

Although there are SEVERAL similarities to Zedd’s  2017 smash hit “Stay” featuring alt-crush Alessia Cara, “Middle” still has that pop glimmer we love so much. The female vocals are stellar and the beat drop at the chorus is just as good as it always is. Zedd’s sound continues to be niche and who cares, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Morris tweeted in support of the hot track, saying, “When Zedd comes to Nashville to record your vocal, you race there. So proud to be apart of this jam.”

Who You Need: Ashe

WHO: Ashe

WHERE: San Jose, CA

GENRE: Pop

TOP TRACKS: “World On Fire” “Used To It”

Ashe is currently opening for EDM/Pop wonderboy Whethan on his fall tour. From the minute she sets barefoot on the stage, she makes it her own. With Blake Lively blonde long locks and a friendly smile, this California native is a ray of sunshine, head to toe.

Keyboard, drums, and backing beats help shape her sound on stage to something much higher and elevated. Ashe’s voice is what really drew me in. I was amazed at the amount of grit and power behind her otherwise Tinkerbell-like gorgeous vocals. She fits into pop music like a warm mitten on a cold hand in the middle of December.

The 24-year-old’s first solo single, “Used To It” has over 1,000,000 plays on Spotify and is growing more popular as she continues to perform it on tour. A cute song that features a slight hint of the dance/pop sound we’ve heard from her on other feature tracks like the recent “Right To It” with Louis the Child and Whethan’s “Can’t Hide”. I chatted with the singer about her musical beginnings and insanely bright future.

When did you first start playing music?

“Oh, I don’t know. Music sorta found me. I’ve been playing piano since 8 or so I think, singing and writing for as long as I can remember. I went to Berklee College of Music in Boston for writing and production, learning to write for big bands and orchestras. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to “be” in music, I just knew it was the only thing I wanted to do with my life, I wanted to be surrounded by it and drowning in it always.”

You’re featured on several collaborations, how do those happen for you?

“As far as collaborations go, it’s always pretty organic and happens in different ways. Whethan and the guys from Louis the Child have been friends for a while now and it seemed like collaborations were kind of inevitable because we were making music together a bunch.”

What does your solo career look like from here?

“Well, the next single from my album is coming out Nov 10! Called “Girl Who Cried Wolf”, and I’m sooo excited. I’m working on a full album and will be finishing it up when I have time off tour.”

What song do you love playing the most live? and what’s your favorite part about being on tour?

“My favorite song to play live is an unreleased song from the album called “Sometimes People Suck.” My favorite part about being on tour is getting to meet so many new people. Music is such a beautiful thing and I love watching how it brings total strangers together while I’m on stage. 💛”

Quinn XCII: More Than Pop

Quinn’s latest album, The Story of Us is pop shot to the moon and back. Nothing is off limits. The Detroit native proves his voice is one of the most unique in the industry right now. 11 tracks tackle a new element and by the end, you’re convinced he can do no wrong.

Mixed beats lace each song while Quinn’s voice hijacks every syllable. “Don’t You” stands out as one of my favorites. Led by an acoustic guitar, the cutesy track quickly shifts into a low key R&B tune. Quinn doesn’t box himself in one genre, his verses are choppy yet mixed to perfection so the rhythm is NEVER off. The lyrics aren’t cryptic, he keeps it real and honest; “I’m losing my patience, swear she’s dating someone famous,” he spits out.

“Fake Denim” and “Straightjacket” are the catchiest off the album. Both keeping pop elements mixed with a slice of those R&B sounds he does so well. Quinn recently told Billboard that lead single “Straightjacket” is about, “Dating someone who acts one way in public but totally different (and crazier) behind closed doors, and the goal of ultimately exposing that true personality to everyone.” Both tracks have an underlying EDM vibe which parallels perfectly to his go-getter/confident attitude.

While most artists have albums that feel more like fillers, Quinn makes each song a hit single. The Story of Us is a wholesome album. I truly think there is something for everyone on it. I can’t wait to hear/see more from Quinn XCII in the future.

Who You Need: CADE

WHO: CADE

WHERE: Tampa, Florida

GENRE: Electronic/Pop

TOP SONG: “Stay With You”

This 20-year-old is a one man show. Singing, songwriting, and producing on his own to create some serious tracks. Hit single “Care” is what initially drew me in (it currently has 3,714,944 plays on Spotify). The song starts out telling a story (as most do), his voice quivers on each pop note singing “you don’t even care for me anymore…I don’t even care for you anymore”. The drop at the chorus slams in, shaking electronics to their core. I fell in love with the contrast of sounds from verse to chorus, but somehow, they continue to mesh together in such a cool way.

His collaboration with fellow EDMsters’ Cheat Codes, “Stay With You” is another lyrically driven track, something Cade seems to have made his trademark so far. “Where We Left” is his most recent single. Try not to get addicted…
